At Edgewood, MilliganGray has worked with Griffner to ensure that the highest quality natural and sustainable raw materials are used throughout the manufacturing and construction process.

Environmental credentials

Wood is at the heart of each Edgewood home. For all key structural elements, we use the highest-quality, low-moisture spruce wood or high-strength laminated timber. The cladding which graces the exterior walls is also made from specially selected timber: in this instance, beautiful, low-moisture larch wood.

These natural materials provide exceptional strength and, because they are sourced from sustainable forests, provide an environmentally sensitive solution. Their environmental credentials are further underlined by the fact that wood has the lowest embodied energy (the amount of energy it takes to make) of any commonly used building material.

Healthy homes

The other key building materials used at Edgewood are also exceptional. The interior walls are lined with Fermacell, a high-performance fibre-reinforced gypsum board. This is significantly more expensive than the commonly used alternative and is employed here because of its excellent rigidity, soundproofing and environmental benefits. The insulation used at Edgewood also has exceptional environmental and performance credentials. Called Homatherm, it is made from cellulose, recycled paper and jute.

Every effort has been made to keep chemical use at a minimum and to make the homes at Edgewood ‘healthy’ buildings. For example, the oriented strand board used in the walls is formaldehyde free. Another component based on renewable timber, it breathes and helps to regulate moisture balance. Like the other components used at Edgewood, it has been chosen because it is the best material for the job.
